The June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article on the Maker Workstation.  You can build in a couple of ways. This set of templates is for building a workstation using a router, 3/8″ bit, and a 5/8″ bushing to route 3/4″ dog holes. There are three template files included in this set. One for making a 26×24 offset template for making a Maker Workstation. One for making a 23×23 offset top plate/Worx Sidekick template. The third is a small template for routing out pockets for side plate mounts. Required for the pocket operation are a 1/4″ bit and 7/16″ bushing.

CNC-made templates are required for this project. To make them, you need template CAD files, a CNC, or a CNC service. Sorry, printing out paper templates and using a drill will not work for this project. The precision required on this project is too high.

An alternative template set for using a drill guide is also available here

Ready-made Maker Workstation templates will be available for purchase as the woodworking. digital store, soon.

You also need a Maker Workstation Layer Guide. It’s free and the 72″ x 24″ Guide is available here.

These CAD files in DXF format are for making or having someone make physical templates needed for the project with a CNC. This project calls for high precision so laying out and using regular woodworking techniques won’t work. You need a precision CNC template set to make the Maker Workstation. I suggest you make your templates out of 1/2″ or thicker MDF in order to control the 3/4″ Forstner drill bit used in this project.

A 1/4″  bit is needed to CNC the templates. Precision is important when machining these templates. Dog hole size is critical. Make sure you measure your bits before machining. Most .250″ bits are actually .242″-.245″. Adjust accordingly when programming a CNC.

See the print issue or popularwoodworking.com for more project information and step-by-step articles to help you build the project.

My request back at you: If you build a Maker Workstation, I’d like to see it. I’d appreciate it if you send a photo and if you post it on social media, tag @woodworking.digital on Instagram and use the hashtag #makerworkstation.

Sometimes a simple solution is the best way to solve a complicated problem. Plywood variations require test fitting when it comes to CNC based plywood joinery. Skip all those measurements and use the Plywood Thickness Tester instead. But, here’s the thing: the only way you can make one is with a CNC. For that you’ll need to download the DXF or Rhino3D files and program to make the cuts for the slots with a .250″ bit. The PDF file is for labeling the thickness tester.

Woodworkers naturally want to show and share what we make. If you’re at it long enough, you might even begin to think about showing and maybe even selling your creations. One practical challenge is figuring out a way to display your work. Large pieces, like furniture, can stand on their own. Smaller pieces, like boxes or spoons, are best displayed on tables. But, if you make things that need to be hung vertically, there’s no way around it: you’re going to need a wall. Here’s a plan to build portable display/show panels from sheets of plywood. If you have a large CNC, these are easy to make. If you have a small CNC you can make a pattern to help you make large panels with a router. Here’s a link to the original article on how to build them at Popular Woodworking.

Starting with a tree I designed a few years ago plus a simple base, I came up with a last-minute holiday project to display greeting cards. The trees were cut out of 1/8″ plywood with a laser cutter, but you should be able to get just as good results on a CNC with a 1/8″ bit.

Here’s a perfect project to try out the Plywood Thickness Tester. A Tool Tote designed to fit in a Festool/Tanos #4 Systainer. The layout of the Tote is designed for a collection of hand tools that you’d want to take to a woodworking workshop or class. But, you can create your layout for the tools you need for other uses. Plus, the tote breaks down for easy storage when not needed. To make the tool tote, you’ll need a CNC. But, being small any CNC will work great. Files include Rhino3D, DXF and PDF versions.

Parametric furniture can built in several ways, but by far the fastest is to build my Modern Parametric Bench featured in the December 2019 issue of Popular Woodworking with a CNC. The size of your CNC will dictate your approach. Smaller CNCs or Shaper Origin owners might be better off CNCing out a pattern and shaping the parts with a router. Larger CNC owners will want to machine their parts. The DXF file contains both the offset pattern and the actual part. The PDF file is the basic information for anyone building this project. For the spine, follow the concepts in the article to create your own.

The December 2019 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article building a modern parametric bench using a new furniture making method: spine and rib furniture construction. You can build it with a CNC, a Shaper Origin hand-held CNC or with just a router and jig saw thanks to a new shaping technique. Look for the issue to get the whole story and follow this link to see my PWW blogs posts on additional details, tips and methods for making your own parametric bench.

Featured in Tim's Fine Woodworking article July/Aug 2014. The best jig I ever designed!

This simple and flexible jig makes shaping easier, faster and safer. The best way to make the jig is to make a template with your CNC and use that template and a router to make all the jig parts. Dimensions are critical so make sure you read the detailed project information in the July/August 2014 Fine Woodworking article, Smart Jig for Pattern Routing and watch the Video. This is a template for make laying out to the proper 3-1/2″ spacing and routing out the top and bottom plates of the jig. When I need to make my own jig parts — such as a new bottom plates for a need, I use this template rather than a CNC. It’s just simpler. My standard collection of jig parts are shown the product gallery.

The CNC’d jig template makes laying out top and bottom plates fast and simple. A few two-clamp top plates, a one-clamp top plate combined with bottom plates of various lengths and shape and you can pattern shape anything. I no longer use part-specific specialized shaping jigs. With over 100 pieces pieces in my furniture line, 95% of all parts are pattern shaped with this jig set. Really.

To make the template with a CNC use a 1/4″ bit and 1/2″ MDF to make the template. Then make the jig parts using a 3/8″ bit, a router with a 5/8″ bushing and 1/2″ and 3/4″ Baltic Birch Plywood. Refer to the 2014 Fine Woodworking article for the details.
