To machine the Maker Workstation as featured in the June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking you will also need CAD drawings for the Top, Base, and Accessories.

The June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article on the Maker Workstation.  This is a DXF file to CNC machine a dedicated spoil board for the Shapeoko XL CNC that aligns and registers Maker Workstation layers or templates. With the spoil board, you can machine the full 24″ x 72″ workstation or any other 24″ or so wide project that requires repositioning. It can also be used to make the 30-3/8″ x 66″ base. It requires an XL and a .250″ bit. Measure your bits and adjust your CAM settings before machining. if you have the large XXL, adjust dimensions and add extra registration holes as needed. Also required are two 1″ x 1/4″ steel registration pins to realign the jig to the Shapeoko’s bed.

This file is in DXF format. Notes for what needs to be done are in the file.

A 1/4″  bit is needed to CNC the spoil board. Precision is important when machining these templates. Dog hole size is critical. Make sure you measure your bits before machining. Most .250″ bits are actually .242″-.245″. Adjust accordingly when programming a CNC.

See the print issue or popularwoodworking.com for more project information and step-by-step articles to help you build the project.

The June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article on the Maker Workstation.  This is a basic PDF format drawing of the Workstation Vise Module that is a component of the workstation. It’s a MWS side plate with a bottom-mounted Yost 9″ woodworking vise. Other 9″ single screw, twin-rail front vises that basically are a frame without vise chops will work, but free-standing metal vises are too big to mount on the side plates. Refer to the vise installation instructions for the size and location of through holes. To make the module you’ll need a blank 16″ x 3.5″ side plate and 3/4″ 13-ply Baltic Birch plywood for the vise chop. I suggest making two chops and laminating them together. It’s easy to build the vise chop add-on module using standard woodworking tools.

The June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article on the Maker Workstation.  This is a basic PDF format drawing Maker Workstation layer guide. All the dog holes require high accuracy and should be made using the Maker Workstation CNC-made templates. DXF template files are available in the woodworking.digital store. And, they are free!

With a CNC template, you need a Maker Workstation Layer Guide to keep you on track. This is the 72″ x 24″ Layer Guide. Other Layer Guides will be available soon. Later I’ll add 96 mm x 20 mm metric Layer Guides. Why use a guide? To keep track of where drill dog holes and T-Nuts are located. And, because drilling a grid of holes everywhere is a bad idea. More holes make your workbench less useful. Layer Guides offer optimal layouts for dog hole and T-Nut locations, leaving large open areas for workbenches of specific sizes. If a project comes up where you need more holes or a different layout, best to create Maker Workstation Top Plates (using the free CNC template for Top Plates/Worx Sidekicks) and workstation furniture. Remember the design principle: less is more.

This template set is for using a router, 3/8" bit and 5/8" bushing. Files are in DXF format.

The post Maker Workstation Template Files | Router Offset Version appeared first on woodworking.digital.

The June 2021 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine features my article on the Maker Workstation.  You can build in a couple of ways. This set of templates is for building a workstation using a router, 3/8″ bit, and a 5/8″ bushing to route 3/4″ dog holes. There are three template files included in this set. One for making a 26×24 offset template for making a Maker Workstation. One for making a 23×23 offset top plate/Worx Sidekick template. The third is a small template for routing out pockets for side plate mounts. Required for the pocket operation are a 1/4″ bit and 7/16″ bushing.

CNC-made templates are required for this project. To make them, you need template CAD files, a CNC, or a CNC service. Sorry, printing out paper templates and using a drill will not work for this project. The precision required on this project is too high.

An alternative template set for using a drill guide is also available here

Ready-made Maker Workstation templates will be available for purchase as the woodworking. digital store, soon.

You also need a Maker Workstation Layer Guide. It’s free and the 72″ x 24″ Guide is available here.

These CAD files in DXF format are for making or having someone make physical templates needed for the project with a CNC. This project calls for high precision so laying out and using regular woodworking techniques won’t work. You need a precision CNC template set to make the Maker Workstation. I suggest you make your templates out of 1/2″ or thicker MDF in order to control the 3/4″ Forstner drill bit used in this project.

A 1/4″  bit is needed to CNC the templates. Precision is important when machining these templates. Dog hole size is critical. Make sure you measure your bits before machining. Most .250″ bits are actually .242″-.245″. Adjust accordingly when programming a CNC.

Skip all those measurements and use the Plywood Thickness Tester instead. But, here’s the thing: the only way you can make one is with a CNC. Woodworkers naturally want to show and share what we make. If you’re at it long enough, you might even begin to think about showing and maybe even selling your creations. One practical challenge is figuring out a way to display your work. Large pieces, like furniture, can stand on their own. Smaller pieces, like boxes or spoons, are best displayed on tables. But, if you make things that need to be hung vertically, there’s no way around it: you’re going to need a wall. Here’s a plan to build portable display/show panels from sheets of plywood. If you have a large CNC, these are easy to make. If you have a small CNC you can make a pattern to help you make large panels with a router. Here’s a link to the original article on how to build them at Popular Woodworking.
